Inspired by the spirit of the Poor People’s Campaign, we’re starting a new kind of financial literacy effort—one rooted in dignity, shared learning, and honest conversation. This isn’t a traditional class. It’s a space to talk about finance, what really matters, and how understanding can shape our choices. Along the way, we’ll cover the practical material a class might include and fill in any gaps together.

Financial Literacy Pilot Project.png

Members are invited to join a pilot workshop to help shape the format and content. The pilot will likely run for six sessions of thoughtful, practical conversation.

Topics may include:

  • Budgeting: making decisions that support your future self

  • Spending and identity: how money relates to belonging and self-worth

  • The financial landscape: insurance, credit, estate planning, retirement, saving, investing, scams, and online tools

  • Income management: handling debt, irregular income, and unexpected expenses

  • Talking about money without shame

We're especially hoping to include participants with a wide range of experiences and perspectives.

Group size will be limited for this first pilot round.

Continuing the Conversation- Monthly Discussion .png

Join us each month on the 3rd Tuesday from 7-8:30pm, for a discussion centered on building and supporting community and fostering joy. These monthly conversations sprouted from the Chain of Change book discussions the branch participated in as the part of the Mel King Institute's statewide read of the late Mel King's book Chain of Change: Struggle for Black Community Development.

These monthly chats are meant to be informal and we welcome ideas about topics to discuss. Some gatherings may focus on a specific topic at times, which will be shared in advance. All are welcome.

After completing this RSVP form, you will be added to the group email list, and the location of the discussion will be emailed to you.
